Abstract: The use of new technologies in the classroom is expected to foster active learning by engaging students in the process. Recent technological additions to this environment have included Tablet PCs, wireless network access and interactive whiteboards. Used effectively, these individual technologies have the potential to change the classroom dynamics and foster new pedagogical approaches. This paper investigates and analyzes the effectiveness and usefulness of a combination of advanced technologies as a tool for teaching in the context of a technologically enhanced, mobile and flexible learning environment. The overall focus is on the use of technology to augment traditional teaching methods with the end objective of increasing the level of student engagement, motivation and interaction. Conclusions: The overall experience of using the Tablet PC, wireless access and digital inking for teaching has being extremely beneficial and clearly shows the potential for the use of these technologies in an educational environment. The combination of the Tablet PC platform with inking capabilities and wireless access is a very powerful combination. From a teaching staff perspective it offers flexibility, mobility and opportunities for new modes of teaching and work related activities. From a student perspective this project has had a profound, permanent and deep impact on the student experience at the University, where the technology and related facilities was very quickly integrated into the overall student experience becoming indispensable in a very short time period.
