Sammendrag: The Handheld Devices for Ubiquitous Learning (HDUL) project, funded by Harvard's Provost and under the guidance of Professor Chris Dede, sought to determine how wireless - which include, but are not limited to, cellular telephones, personal - could enhance learning and teaching in university settings (http://gseacademic.harvard.edu/~hdul/). During the 2003-2004 and 2004- 2005 academic years, HDUL successfully integrated WHDs into eight diverse graduate courses. Interpretation of the data collected from HDUL implementations demonstrated WHDs as (1) portable research assistants and (2) traveling conduits for online learning. In addition, the HDUL project revealed important design heuristics for integrating WHDs into university settings. Further analysis of the HDUL data inductively led to the development of a theoretical framework for understanding and articulating the affordances of WHDs in support of learning and teaching in university settings, with potential generalization to other educational contexts. This paper presents summary findings from the HDUL project and complementary research projects in augmented reality now underway.
