News of the London Mobile Learning Group

The London M-learning Group brings together an international, interdisciplinary group of researchers from the fields of cultural studies, sociology, semiotics, pedagogy and educational technology from the Institute of Education, the University of Kassel, the London Metropolitan University and the University of Verona.
The group is working on a theoretical and conceptual framework for mobile learning around the notion of cultural ecology. The analytical engagement with mobile learning of the group takes the shape of a conceptual model in which educational uses of mobile technologies are viewed in ecological terms as part of a cultural and pedagogical context in transformation.
Members of the group work on various projects and publications with each other, and organise joint events.

Workshop Summary:
Our hands-on workshop convenes educational designers and learning technology architects to author inquiry learning activities and user experiences. Participants will use a scenario editor to design classroom and field activities based on pedagogical approaches such as personal inquiry. Designs will be implemented using modeling tools, mobile devices and inquiry management tools provided by the organizers. Participants will gain insight into new pedagogicaland technological approaches for inquiry learning and discuss implications for their future work.

Audience:
We invite researchers working in the fields of educational technology and science learning who are interested in designing and running activities in inquiry-based environments. Participants should ideally have experiences in designing or using software to support science classroom or outdoor learning activities. Sharing experiences before the workshop is considered crucial to safeguard successful fulfillment of the workshop aims and to tailor the workshop activities to the participants needs. Young researchers are especially encouraged to apply.

Activities:
The workshop is divided into four sessions that include discussions and hands-on work with the different technologies. The first session contains a brief overview of three prominent approaches in computer-based inquiry learning: Personal Inquiry, Mobile Collaboratories and Emerging Learning Objects. Their relevance in three ongoing science projects will be presented. The second session is Designing Inquiry Activities that sets the content and structure for the next sessions. The third session consists of three concurrent work activities. In each of these activities the participants will work in groups running different learning scenarios based on the three projects. The experiences from the previous session’s activities and created artifacts will inform the fourth session, the debriefing session. The aim of this fourth session is to discuss how inquiry based science learning supported with technology can be implemented more effectively in schools and what challenges this creates for the research, design, and ultimately practice.

Participation:
To participate in this workshop, please submit position statements (max. 1000 Words) to icls2010workshop@collide.info. Participants are asked to anticipate activities related to inquiry learning that they would like to design and run during the workshop. The statements should include cases or problems with respect to specific areas of content (e.g. how to produce healthy milk, understanding eco systems), envision inquiry learning activities resulting in pedagogical scenarios (e.g. develop a concept map, run experiments etc.). Please review the Workshop-Wiki to see what kinds of inquiry tools are available. Submissions will be reviewed by the proposers of the workshop. People, who have not submitted a position paper may attend the workshop, provided there are seats left. Maximum number of participants is 20.

Deadline for submission of position statements:
Brief description of workshop:
This workshop is organised by the convenor of the London Mobile Learning Group (LMLG) (www.londonmobilelearning.net), housed at the Centre for Excellence in Work-based Learning for Educational Professionals (www.wlecentre.ac.uk) at the Institute of Education, London (www.ioe.ac.uk).
download download background paper

The LMLG comprises an international, interdisciplinary group of researchers from the fields of educational, media and cultural studies, social semiotics and educational technology.

The workshop inter alia seeks to explore the following questions and issues:

    * What relationship is there between user-generated content, user-generated contexts and learning? How can educational institutions cope with the more informal communicative approaches to digital interactions that new generations of learners possess?
    * Learning as a process of meaning-making for us occurs through acts of communication, which take place within rapidly changing socio-cultural, mass communication and technological structures. Does the notion of learner-generated cultural resources represent a sustainable paradigm shift for formal education in which learning is viewed in categories of context and not content? What are the issues in terms of 'text' production in terms of modes of representation, (re)contextualisation and conceptions of literacy? Who decides/redefines what it means to have coherence in contemporary interaction?
    * What synergies are there between the socio-cultural ecological approach to mobile learning, which the group has developed through its work to date, with paradigms developed by different TEL communities in Europe?
    * What pedagogical parameters are there in response to the significant transformation of society, culture and education currently taking place alongside technological innovation?

The LMLG sees learning using mobile devices governed by a triangular relationship between socio-cultural structures, cultural practices and the agency of media users / learners, represented in the three domains. The interrelationship of these three components: agency, the user's capacity to act on the world, cultural practices, the routines users engage in their everyday lives, and the socio-cultural and technological structures that govern their being in the world, we see as an ecology, which in turn manifests itself in the form of an emerging cultural transformation. Another significant trend, which requires pedagogical responses, is the prevalence of what we call 'user-generated contexts'. We are currently witnessing a significant shift away from traditional forms of mass communication and editorial push towards user-generated content and individualised communication contexts. These structural changes to mass communication also affect the agency of the user and their relationship with traditional and new media. Indeed, we argue that users are now actively engaged in shaping their own forms of individualised generation of contexts for learning through individualised communication contexts. New relationships between context and production are emerging in that mobile devices not only enable the production of content but also of contexts. They position the user in new relationships with space, i.e. the outer world, and place, i.e. social space. Mobile devices enable and foster the broadening and breaking up of genres. Citizens become content producers who are part of an explosion of activity in the area of user-generated content. What, we ask, are the implications for education?

The workshop will be attended by the following colleagues from across Europe who work in and across various aspects of the fields of education and educational technology:
Elisabeth Adami, Verona
Graham Attwell, Pontydysgu
Ben Bachmair, Kassel

The 2-day workshop will be sub-divided into the following themed 2-hour sessions:

1. opening session (Pachler): socio-cultural transformation, ecology, user generated/responsive contexts
2. MyMobile project/pedagogy (Bachmair, Risch)
5. content (Hug, Bang)
6. literacy (Cook, Adami, Boeck)
7. sustainability (Traxler, Naeve)
8. closing session (Pachler)

Each contributor will have put together a briefing paper prior to the workshop with key questions, which will be explored with reference to the key components of the LMLG's emerging theory of mobile learning and its key components: structures, agency, practices; user-generated, responsive contexts; transformations etc.

Mobile Learning, a Retrospective Outlook

Since its inauguration in 2005, the IADIS Mobile Learning conference series has provided a forum to present, discuss and promote international mobile learning research.

Past conference themes have focused on pedagogical approaches most suited for mobile learning such as collaborative, contextual, and constructivist which support data collection, context & location awareness and distributed activities. In 2007 the conference aimed to harness an international perspective on the 'big issues' in mobile learning by discussing topics such as the conflict between personal informal learning and traditional classroom education, the evaluation of mobile learning and appropriate methods for this setting, the design of mobile learning activities and the integration of mobile devices in the broader educational scenarios, among others. In 2008, our concern was to explore various dimensions of the learners' mobility for example, physical, conceptual and social, to discern how these in conjunction with mobile and fix technologies may support learning. Last year, the conference debated the increasing phenomenon of user generated content, in particular mobile media.

Five years on, the IADIS Mobile Learning 2010 International Conference seeks to provide a forum for the presentation and discussion of mobile learning research which provides a retrospective outlook of the field. We seek contributions under the topics below which illustrate developments in the field.
Call for Papers
Based on shared research interests between the two communities, IEEE WMUTE (International Conference on Wireless, Mobile and Ubiquitous Technologies in Education) and IEEE DIGITEL (International Conference on Digital Game and Intelligent Toy Enhanced Learning) conference 2010 will be jointly held in Kaohsiung Taiwan. Participants of both conferences will be able to interact and exchange ideas which we hope can stimulate more exciting ideas for future research.
The convergence of global adoption of smart phones integrating hi-quality media capture devices and trends in social networking, participatory media and cyber infrastructure provide remarkable opportunities for making mobile social media integral to distributed learning environments. Social networking and user-generated media like YouTube, Facebook, Wikipedia and Flickr are moving beyond the stationary PC onto mobile devices like iPhone and low-price netbook computers. Social applications are also becoming a new communication and networking method in sectors such as business, entertainment and education. We expect to see mobile social media, incorporating video, photos, social networking and communication capabilities to be one of the major new applications for the mobile web, and we welcome contributions that help advance visions, technologies, research and theories to better support learning and educational purposes.
Arguably the impact of mobile social media will be universal, augmenting with distributed social media tools the face-to-face social interactions that now enable learning and teaching interactions. Learners may tap social networks and recommendations for learning in pursuit of their interests over informal and formal settings. Students could learn from a broader universe of user-generated content, beyond “prescribed” content provided by teachers or textbooks. The mobile social network can potentially foster richer parent-child interactions for learning, and enable different parent roles supporting education, and more vibrant and productive interactions between learning at school, home and neighborhood. In classroom settings, mobile devices can enrich interactivity and inter-operability of digital expression and potentially provide supervision and decision support for teachers. The well-documented powers of informal learning in workplaces can be served well with social mobile media. Therefore, WMUTE 2010 hopes to initiate a new line of research and practice that highlights both social and technological innovation in order to support and amalgamate contemporary social learning theories. This theme-based conference will expose the results of current research efforts in this field as well as identify future challenges and research priorities. The scope of WMUTE 2010 will cover but not be limited to:
*      Mobile social media
* User experiences in mobile social media creation and collaboration

Workshop entitled 'Technology-enhanced learning in the context of technological, societal and cultural transformations' accepted for Alpine Rendez-Vous

LMLG workshop at the Alpine Rendez-Vous

Workshop entitled 'Technology-enhanced learning in the context of technological, societal and cultural transformations'
November 30 to December 1 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Bavaria

In the workshop the group inter alia will seek to explore the following questions and issues:

* What relationship is there between user-generated content, user-generated contexts and learning? How can educational institutions cope with the more informal communicative approaches to digital interactions that new generations of learners possess?
* Learning as a process of meaning-making for us occurs through acts of communication, which take place within rapidly changing socio-cultural, mass communication and technological structures. Does the notion of learner-generated cultural resources represent a sustainable paradigm shift for formal education in which learning is viewed in categories of context and not content? What are the issues in terms of Text production in terms of modes of representation, (re)contextualisation and conceptions of Literacy? Who decides/redefines what it means to have coherence in contemporary interaction?
* What synergies are there between the socio-cultural ecological approach to mobile learning, which the group has developed through its work to date, with paradigms developed by different TEL communities in Europe?
* What pedagogical parameters are there in response to the significant transformation of society, culture and education currently taking place alongside technological innovation?

We see learning using mobile devices governed by a triangular relationship between socio-cultural structures, cultural practices and the agency of media users / learners, represented in the three domains. Another significant trend, which requires pedagogical responses, is the prevalence of what we call user-generated contexts.

Recently launched: Mo-LeaP - The Mobile Learning Projects Database

Are you interested in mobile learning practice and curious about the latest ideas on the implementation of learning with mobile devices in educational contexts? Then have a look at our database! Just browse or search - or even submit your own project.

http://www.londonmobilelearning.net/moleap/

Research on mobile learning is essentially related to the implementation of mobile learning projects in different contexts such as education or everyday life. Projects are characterized by different approaches to teaching and learning, locations, and a broad variety of technologies; also, they are dealing with mobile technologies as topic or they support their use as learning and teaching tools. As the rapidly emerging field of mobile learning originates a tremendous amount of mobile learning projects, Mo-LeaP – the mobile learning projects database is conceptualized as a resource and tool for people who are interested in mobile learning, especially in sharing their experiences and projects with others, or in learning from already existing projects; it aims to provide straightforward functionality on the basis of design principles derived from principled conceptual work in an attempt to facilitate the sharing of pedagogical practice. The database – which is based on the idea of non-proprietary and collaborative knowledge building – aims

* to provide opportunities for the systematic gathering of practice,
* to distribute knowledge which was gained within such projects in order to make practice less ephemeral,
* to enable synergies,
* to contribute to sustainability in teaching, learning and research, as well as
* to enhance replicability of mobile learning projects.

The option to submit data in two languages, English and German, is provided in order to support knowledge transfer and scientific exchange between these two language communities. We hope that the potential for educational exchange and knowledge sharing, the innovative use of mobile technologies in educational contexts as well as support for learners and their technology-related cultural practices will be an incentive for teachers – and educational professionals in general – to either contribute to the database or to learn from projects. As the fast growing content of already existing websites with resources attests, such resources are willingly accepted, frequented and contributed by teachers in order to find new ideas to inform their teaching practice.

Mo-LeaP is part of the project “And don't forget to bring your mobile“–Informing educational target groups about mobile learning opportunities (project holder: Judith Seipold), which is funded by the Centre for Excellence in Work-Based Learning for Education Professionals (WLE Centre) at the Institute of Education (IoE), University of London.
Mobile learning is a rapidly expanding field. Its growing importance is reflected for example in the rising number of conferences and journals. Mobile phones were identified in the Horizon Report (2009) as the technologies with the highest likelihood of entry into the mainstream of learning-focused institutions within the next year. Issues surrounding mobile learning in workbased contexts have only been marginally covered to date despite the potentially huge impact of mobile technologies on supporting work-based learning activities.

Against the background of an increasingly mobile workforce, technological innovations and a changing corporate learning landscape, the central question of this book will be how mobile devices can be used to support work-based learning.

The editors welcome chapters on theoretical frameworks, concepts as well as latest empirical results in the field of work-based mobile learning. The aim is to provide innovative approaches of how mobile devices can encourage work-based learning activities. Contributions can relate to placements as part of education courses, to (semi-formal) on-the job training provided within organisations or to the manifold forms of informal and incidental learning experiences at the work place. Also, contributions, which consider life-long learning as a sustainable basis for work-based learning and critical reviews of cultural implications of work-based learning, are welcome.

Topics of interest in the field of mobile work-based
learning include, but are by no means limited to:
••collaboration,
••mentoring, coaching & facilitating
••creation, reflection and sharing of learning materials,
••assessment methods,
••contextualisation and personalisation of content,
••location awareness,

WLE/LMLG M-Learning Symposium - Call for papers

                Background
Research on mobile learning is currently making a shift from practice-orientated research to theory building, often focusing on theorising communicative and discursive practices. In this context, an emerging tendency in theory building is to consider experiences related to the learners’ life worlds, agencies and cultural practices, in out-of-school, informal contexts.
To understand personalised, learner-centred learning from a cultural perspective, practitioners need to explore these life world contexts in terms of the learner’s personal lifestyle, socio-economic status, experiences and interests. The challenge for practitioners is to learn from the learners’ agencies, to critically reflect upon the changing cultural practices that emerge from the use of new technologies, and to integrate the assets that young people acquire in leisure contexts into successful learning experiences in formal contexts such as school, higher education and work.
One of the pedagogic aims of such a cultural ecology of mobile learning is to build new links, or to strengthen existing ones, between the different contexts in a learner’s life with the aim to provide continuity for learning, to minimise the risk of failure, and to nurture lifelong learning.
As learning with mobile media is increasingly less bound by specific locations, occasions, contents and individuals, and as research on mobile learning can increasingly accommodate a growing diversity of experiences and findings, this symposium aims to address different audiences, with a focus on education professionals and practitioners from school, work and leisure. All are invited to participate in an exchange of experiences and ideas.
The symposium will focus on mobile learning theory and practice in education, work and leisure and will address the following themes:
- Learning across contexts
- Cultural approaches to mobile learning
- Status quo, visions and conjectures
Interdisciplinary approaches and thematic crossovers, both in theory and practice, are particularly welcome. Work in progress and international contributions are encouraged.
The symposium will feature a small number of invited keynote presentations by leading experts in the field. Confirmed speakers and titles will be announced in due course.
